1. "...I have found a small church with a very big heart. The welcome I felt from the first day has only grown stronger..."

I have lived on the north side of Minneapolis for 24 years, and I have witnessed much change. There is so much that is exciting in our neighborhoods: beautiful homes, graceful park spaces, lively events and great people. We are also aware of the problems that either surround us or are certainly nearby. As I watch the evolution of our neighborhood, there are times that it feels difficult.

With all of that in mind, I wish to extend an invitation and welcome to my new church, Parkway United Church of Christ. The church is located on the corner of Lowry and Washburn Ave N. I have driven past it hundreds of times in 24 years, and last summer was drawn by an art festival the church was holding. In the time since, I have found a small church with a very big heart. The welcome I felt from the first day has only grown stronger. I have even chosen to become a member and to become involved in various aspects of the church. The church is open and affirming, specifically to and including the GLBTQ community. That openness and acceptance is welcome, and it is very real, but it is just a part of what makes this church community special. The ministry and outreach to youth, the music and arts (including an art gallery within the church, featuring local artists), and our efforts to reach out to diverse parts of the community are all much more than I would have imagined possible from a church of our size. -Kevin O'Donnell

  2. STAFF

    Kathy, Pastor

Kathy has served Parkway since June 2010. She has an MA in Pastoral Ministry and Social Justice and a Master of Divinity. She has been involved in ministry since 1989 and has worked at St. Joan of Arc Church, where she served as the Director of Children's Faith Formation. Kathy and her partner, Carol, have children Joe, Annie, Shauna, and Tim.

David, Director of Children & Youth

David has been Parkway’s full-time Youth Coordinator since September 2007, but the relationships he has built with many of our members started long before that.  Before joining us, he got to know many of Parkway’s members through Pilgrim Point Camp, where he worked full-time for five summers.  He continues to serve the Minnesota Conference United Church of Christ as the Conference Program Director. David believes strongly that children, youth, and young adults are vital to communities of ministry and mission and that everyone, no matter who they are or where they are on life’s journey, is welcome at Parkway.

David graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with degrees in Psychology and K-12 Vocal Music Education.  When he is not working with youth, David’s interests vary from technology to fitness to politics.

Charlene, Office Administrator & Prayer Requests

Charlene has worked in the church office since June 2005. She is also church Treasurer and serves on some of the boards at Parkway. Her husband, Greg, sings in the choir. Charlene also has three kids: Travis, Molly, and Graham. In her spare time, Charlene enjoys sewing and quilting. She has also recently started taking piano lessons from the church organist!

    Bonnie, Music Director

Bonnie McClain joined us as Music Director in 1994 and has brought great energy to our music program and worship experience. Under Bonnie’s direction, the choir has grown musically and has undertaken many challenging major works. Through her numerous musical connections, she has enhanced Parkway’s music ministry by bringing in a wide variety of groups and guest soloists for concerts, such as Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus, Onalaska High School Choir, Nordkap Male Chorus, and many accomplished musicians for our Advent concert series, Noel at Noon, and for Matinee Musicale. In addition to conducting, Bonnie is an accomplished soprano and is an active recitalist and guest artist.

Prior to moving to Minneapolis, Bonnie lived in Southern California where she was the Music Director at Irvine United Church of Christ, soprano soloist at Crystal Cathedral, and soprano soloist at Temple Israel of Hollywood.

    Dan, Organist/Pianist

Dan Ritter has been organist at Parkway since January of 2002.  He appreciates the emphasis that Parkway places on good music (with a top-notch music director), and enjoys playing the wonderful pipe organ and pianos.  Before Parkway, Dan was organist at Lynnhurst UCC for twelve years.  He has a bachelor’s in piano performance from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.  Dan teaches piano lessons, and plays for three other choirs, besides the church choir: Nordkap Male Chorus, American Swedish Institute Male Chorus, and Pistachio Singers (a female chorus).
